ABC Renews ’Agents of SHIELD,’ ’Agent Carter’

ABC has solidified its Marvel lineup for the 2015-16 broadcast season.

The network has renewed Marvel’s first live-action scripted foray Agents of SHIELD and given a second season to bridge series Agent Carter, starring Hayley Atwell.

In its second season, Agents of SHIELD averaged a 1.5 rating among adults 18-49 on Tuesdays. The drama starring Clark Gregg and Ming-Na Wen is one of the strongest performers among broadcast’s rapidly growing roster of comic book-themed series.

While the Marvel flagship wasn’t a runaway hit compared with the comic book powerhouse’s box-office behemoths, the Avengers spinoff — which routinely connects with the Marvel Cinematic Universe — was a reliable performer when adding DVR, with an average 7.3 million total viewers and a 2.8 in the key adults 18-49 demo.

The renewal of Agents of SHIELD comes as ABC is plotting a spinoff of the series — starring Adrianne Palicki and Nick Blood — and a mystery project described as a reinvention of an existing superhero character from EP John Ridley.

Meanwhile, Agent Carter — from writing duo Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters — will return for a second season. The Captain America : The First Avenger spinoff is Marvel’s first female-driven entry. The drama opened to strong reviews — THR chief TV critic Tim Goodman said "Marvel and ABC finally get it right" — and soft viewership. The eight-episode series averaged 5 million total viewers and a 1.8 in the demo — and almost doubled its returns when factoring in seven days of DVR viewing. It shows a commitment on ABC and Marvel’s part to let the series grow.

The decision to renew Carter comes as Fazekas and Butters will see second-year drama Resurrection get the ax. The duo told THR that they envisioned multiple seasons for the short-order drama, with the season ending with a slight cliffhanger.

Keep up with all the renewals, cancellations and new series orders with THR’s handy Scorecard.
